This easy to knit hat is designed to fit preschool and kindergarten children (aged about 3-5 years). It works particularly well in a multicolor yarn.

Materials: Worsted weight yarn.

Needles: #6 US - 16" circular

Instructions:

This makes a child's size small. To make a larger hat, cast on more stitches (always use an even number) and make the patterned section of the hat longer. Another option is to vary the size of the needles used.

Waffle Stitch

Round 1: *K1, K into the stitch below* repeat around
Round 2: Knit
Round 3: *K into the stitch below, K1* repeat around
Round 4: Knit

Repeat these 4 rounds for pattern. Note that to "knit into the stitch below," insert the tip of the needle into the stitch directly below the one you would normally knit. When the stitch has been knitted and slipped off the left needle, both strands (from the last 2 rounds) will have been knitted up by the current stitch.

Cast on 60 sts.

Join ends of cast on row, being careful not to twist knitting.
Working circularly, knit 8 rounds.
Work in Waffle Stitch for 7".
Bind off. Turn hat inside out, flatten, and seam the top edge together. Make 2 tassels and fasten to points of hat. Weave in ends.
